You Have Just Received Good News!

Welcome to the first edition EVER of Denny Strecker’s Karate “The Good News.”

The local TV, radio and newspapers are so full of doom and gloom that we decided to create our own newsletter to help spread words of encouragement, happiness and joy. Each month you will hear about someone accomplishing one of their life goals, or a fantastic act of kindness, learn what the Dojo Dogs are up to, or a funny story you can share with the rest of your family.

And we love hearing from YOU! If you have a story or event that you want to share, please tell us about and help spread the Good News.

Our Random Acts of Kindness Program is now spreading into the community. We have completed over 12,000 acts of kindness. We have set a goal to reach one MILLION!

Sempai Raxter is hard at work on her training for her Second Degree Black Belt.

Sempai Strecker has become a certified Anger Management Teacher and she will be working with local schools in the fall to help teach students (and teachers) how to deal with stress and anger.

Sensei is now the Chairperson for the Warren Group of the Chamber of Commerce. He now works with hundreds of other local businesses to improve our community and help people in need.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Keep an eye on your mailbox at the beginning of each month to learn what other new things are going on.

We are ALWAYS on the lookout for Good News and we are glad to have you as a subscriber!

Best wishes,

Denny Strecker

You Are Invited to Our Annual Summer Picnic

This year’s Annual Picnic will be held at Butcher Park on August 15th from 3pm to 6pm. Current students, former students, guests, family, friends, and neighbors are all invited to join us to celebrate.

This year families are bringing a dish to pass so everyone can enjoy a variety of delicious food.

Please register for the picnic by calling the school at (586) 573-3881 and letting us know how many people are coming and what dish you will be making. It can be a snack, dessert, salad or side dish. The school will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers.

The park has a great play area for the kids and there are a lot of trees for shade to sit and mingle with other families!

See You There!!

Who’s That Guy?

“I know the price of success: dedication, hard work and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” - Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright was at the head of the Great Wall of Knowledge for the month of July. Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect that is considered, even today, to be one of the greatest architects of all time. Wright designed over 1000 buildings in his time, and over 400 of them were completed. He is known for using nature in his designs, and his structures were works of art. Wright had an amazing vision, and clear goals of what he wanted to accomplish—he even went so far as to design Falling Water, a house that was built on top of a waterfall!

We asked the students to use their vision and describe what their ultimate house would be:

Several students thought that different shapes would be interesting—Round was a big hit, Rosie Pham would name hers “Moon House,” and Howard D. Prewitt even had an idea to roll his house from place to place instead of taking the car! Louise Prewitt liked the idea of a pyramid shape, and Cozette Slupinski thought a volcano would be neat.

Animals also had a big influence--Ian Casmier would have a house shaped like a cat, and would call it, “Meow, “ while Brody Stach wants a Frog house built on the side of a mountain with “froggie doors” so the frogs could come in and stay. Taylor Weatherly dreamed up a shark house, where even her chandelier was made of shark teeth.

Nature was a big part of our plan, too--Michael Blake wanted a house like Falling Water, but with a clear deck that he could go out on to see the water below.

Liz Yeip wants a log house that is toasty warm, and the Juniors class came up with the idea to have a tree house. Spencer Raxter wants a house built on top of a mountain, spilling over the sides, and will call it, ”Avalanche.”

Tara Tillitson got into the spirit of the challenge and drew out her dream house—a submarine under the water that she could breathe normally, but wake up and see sharks, whales, jellyfish and even an octopus outside her window.

Great imagination and creativity from the students this month—stay tuned to learn about our next person on the Great Wall of Knowledge.
(A little hint…his hair is as famous as his scientific theory!)

Ha Ha Ha!

For 35 years, a jeweler notices a man stop and set his watch by the clock in his front window. “Sir, I can’t help but notice that for 35 years, each day, you stop and set your watch by the clock in my window.”

“It’s easy to explain,” the man replied. “You see, I’m the foreman at the plant down the road. It’s my job to blow the whistle at the end of the day. The men depend on me for accurate time.”

“That’s interesting,” commented the jeweler. “Each day, I set my clock by that whistle!”
